MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
As we commence our 95th year as the Società Isole Eolie, we are now at our highest level of membership in its history and this is undoubtedly due to renewed interest in the Società from when we celebrated our 90th anniversary in 2015 together with special events such as the “From Volcanoes we Sailed” exhibition at the Immigration Museum and the film screening of “Da l’Italia a l’Australia”. In 2019 we completed our 70th Anniversary of our Annual Picnic, at Keast Park, Seaford.
As a second-generation Aeolian, I am keen to keep our culture alive and relevant to current and future generations of Aeolians, their families and friends. I hope that as the committee reaches out to the broader Aeolian community over coming months, that you will consider us to be part of your extended family and that you will spend some time with us, at our events.
I am very honoured to be President since 2016 and look forward to working with the committee dedicated to meeting your needs over coming years.
THE FOUNDING OF THE SOCIETÀ ISOLE EOLIE
As an organisation serving and promoting Aeolian culture, the SIE is known to most people as the ‘Isole Eolie Club’ or the ‘Aeolian Club’. When founded in 1925, our charter was to be a social, cultural and welfare point of reference, aiming to help Aeolian migrants settle in Melbourne, offering them a place to meet, as well as providing moral and financial assistance in times of need.
Today as times change and a newer generation is stepping forward, we have a more general focus operating within the wider Italian community, to retain traditional links with the Aeolian Islands and their rich ties with the sea , while keeping alive, in an Australian social setting, customs and practices, such as our history, music, arts, Mediterranean cuisine and renowned pastries.
